About Ethan Hulbert

So you’d like to know more about me, huh?

My name is Ethan James Hulbert. I’m from a small town in Wisconsin, lived in Chicago for a few years, and decided I liked the weather better here in Los Angeles.

I studied a lot of things in college, including nuclear engineering, nanoscience, and television production – but at the end of it all, I came out with a degree in film from Columbia College Chicago. Shooting film was a passion of mine even before that, but formal education helped refine my techniques.

After all, you can’t purposefully break the rules if you don’t even know what they are.

I have a personal collection of antique film cameras, but I almost exclusively shoot on a Petri camera that my father gave to me, which he himself used decades ago.

Although I have studio experience, I’ve always found it boring. I have nothing against it – obviously it has a huge role – but it’s just not as fun to me. I like casual, relaxed atmospheres, impromptu settings, and photos that show who you really are. I think film, shot in the right way, can capture your soul like nothing else can.

The safety and comfort of my subjects is of the utmost importance to me. I think many of us have had bad experiences with photographers (myself included) and it’s one of my guiding principles to not be that guy. You can read more about my ethics here.
